Once you have built your pub shed or home bar it is time to name it. You may have already had a name in mind or still need to come up with one. My post Good Catchy Bar Names may help if you are struggling.
The next step is to make a sign for your pub shed, or have one made for you. Having a personalised pub shed sign just looks great, but where do you get one?
You can go to your local sign writer and get them to make your sign. Or search online for a company that do personalised signs. Believe me, there are plenty of them, so it won’t take long to find one. The price will depend on how much detail you require on your pub sign.
The more detail you require the more expensive your sign will be.
How Is A Pub Shed Sign Made?
While there may still be companies or individuals that will hand craft a sign. Which may be either carving or engraving, or just painting to create a sign.
Most today are made using laser cutting or engraving machines. A design and/or wording are uploaded to a computer or set out on a computer. The computer then directs the laser to cut the design out on the chosen material.
It is a fairly quick process and extremely accurate too. So once you have decided on your pub shed name and any design you might have, it won’t take long for your sign to be ready to fit.
You can also have a sign made that has led lighting or neon lighting as a back drop.
Choosing A Pub Shed Sign
So how do you choose among the many companies that make signs using laser cutting. It all depends on what kind of design you might want.
A more complicated design might need a more specialist company with expensive equipment to deal with all the detail. A more in depth search may be needed for this type of company.
Sometimes though simple is best, and if you want a straight forward sign with your pub name on it. Then one of the easiest places to go is that well known retail site with the same name as a rainforest.
There are plenty of companies to choose from with plenty of pictures of their work. Also there are plenty of reviews too. So you know which companies deliver a quality product and which ones don’t.
I wanted a simple sign, so this is where I started my search. I checked out several companies and soon found the one I would use for my pub sign.
My Pub Shed Sign
I’ve gone for a company called Covering All Occasions a small business producing personalised signs and gifts. Everything they make is produced at their premises in Cheshire, England.
The star rating is 4.5 – 5.0 from 221 reviews, with 75% of those reviews being a straight 5 star. So pretty good and I like a small independent business too.
Personalised Street Sign
The reason I went for this sign apart from what I have already mentioned. Is because it looks like a street sign which I like. It is simple, straightforward and effective.
It comes in three sizes 55cm x 12cm (21.6 inches x 4.7 inches), 80cm x 22cm (31.4 inches x 8.6 inches) and 100cm x 22cm (39.3 inches x 8.6 inches). I went for the smallest one, which is plenty big enough for a pub shed sign.
Ordering is simple, there is a customise button, which then gives you the chance to add your text. When you add your text you can choose from four different fonts, and sixteen colours.
I just chose black text on a white background, like I said simple.
I ordered my sign on the 30th July and it arrived on the 1st August, so pretty quick turn around.
What Is The Sign Like?
“As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.”
Firstly it is good quality, made from an acrylic plastic that has two layers. A white back layer and a black front layer. The letters to my text and border are cut out of the black layer and they are stuck to the white background layer.
However I got a pleasant surprise, I ended up with two signs.
What I hear you say, how did you end up with two signs? Let me explain.
When the sign arrives and you unpack it you are confronted with a complete black front and a white back. You can see the outline of the text, but it is all just black.
The black plastic the letters and border were cut out of leaves like a stencil type template. The company lay this over the top of your sign. So when I lift it out it reveals my black and white sign, but also gives me a template of my text.
This can be used as a stencil for spray painting your name elsewhere, like inside on the bar front. Or when put up against a contrasting background will provide another sign.
I put mine on the wall in my pub shed and it looks great. So I am pleased with my pub sign, it looks good, feels good quality and comes with all the fixings too, including plastic coloured screw covers. And best of all, I got a second bonus sign.
You can take a look at the sign I got here, if you purchase one yourself then I am an Amazon affiliate, so I will get a small commission at no extra cost to you.
Final Thoughts
So picking a home bar or pub shed sign is not difficult. My pub shed sign is based on a street sign, however there are so many types of home bar sign designs to choose from.
As I mentioned earlier you can also get led and neon light signs too. These do look great behind the bar on the back wall.
Whatever you decide to call your home bar, there is a sign that you can get with your bar name on it.
If you want to go for something a little more complex and add images or other graphics, then it is better to go for a specialist sign maker.
One company that specialise in pub shed signs are Two Fat Blokes Bar Sign Emporium. I haven’t used them, but they do have a good name and if I decide later on to go for something in more detail, these are the guys I will go to.
