Arthur Guinness started brewing beer in 1756. Three years later he set up a brewery in St James Gate, Dublin securing a 9000 year lease.
Initially he brewed ale as well as porter, but in 1799 decided to drop the ale and put all his brewing efforts into porter and stout.
Two years later wanting expand his horizons he brewed a strong hoppy porter that could withstand long sea journey’s. This let the brewery export their beer as far as the Caribbean and then beyond.
Over the years Guinness has become one of the best known brands in the world. And when you think of stout or porter the word Guinness always pops in the head.
