Duvel Tripel Hop Citra is a Belgian IPA brewed by Duvel Moorgat Brewery which has been brewing beer since 1871, so they know a thing or two about brewing beer. This monster citrus IPA weighs in at a whopping 9.5% ABV, but is it any good?
The answer is yes, Duvel Tripel Hop Citra is a decent beer, not a typical IPA, but one with a massive bite. It pours a light straw gold with a two finger fluffy white top. On the nose it is vibrant with plenty of citrus wafting from the glass. The taste hits like the nose with plenty of hoppy citrus flavours, however it is laced with a massive alcohol kick. It’s good, but it’s dangerous too, my advice is to just have the one. It gets a rate my beer score of 4.7 out of 5.0.
A cracking little beer that packs a mighty punch.

Tripel Hop Citra IPA Review
This Belgian IPA stands in a dumpy little 330ml brown bottle, and for once I am okay with that, because it really packs a punch with its 9.5% ABV.
The use of Saaz, Styrian Goldings and the now famous Citra hop give a promise of plenty of power in the flavour, but does it deliver? It’s time to get it into the glass.
It pours a very light straw gold and when settled stands with a two finger white head. There is plenty of tiny bubbles streaming up the glass feeding the white top.
On the nose it screams a tropical citrus paradise with notes of pineapple and grapefruit and a sense of sweetness. It certainly delivers on smell setting up the palate for a real treat.
The taste is just as vibrant as the smell, but carries a hell of a kick. While there is plenty of buzz with a hoppy tropical flavour, there is also a massive hit of alcohol too.
There is a good balance of sweet and bitterness that carry through from start to finish, with a slight dryness to the finish.
Not a typical IPA, but nevertheless a decent quality Belgian beer. However this beast of a beer does pack a punch as is best enjoyed as a sipper and definitely not a session beer. For me it reflects a decent score of 4.7 out of 5.0.
M’Lady likes it too, saying, “It’s a good quality beer but I would struggle to finish one and I think it’s giving me a headache.” Lou scores it 4.3 out of 5.0.
So Duvel Triple hop IPA is a good beer, full of power that is likely to blow your socks off.
Duvel Moorgat Brewery
Moorgat Brewery is a fourth generation family brewery dating back to 1871 and now having thirteen breweries throughout the world. As well as Duvel they have 20 brands including Chouffe, Vedett, Liefmans, De Koninke, 805, Boulevard, Firestone Walker and Tank7.
It all started with Jan Leonard Moorgat who founded the Moorgat Farm Brewery along with his wife Maria De Block back in 1871.
Passed down through several generations and 154 years later the brewery is still independent and a big Belgian force in brewing.
An incredible success story that started from humble beginnings.
Duvel Moorgat Beers
While Moorgat brewery brew many beers across a wide variety of brands the Duvel range is pretty small in core.
Although I think they do brew one off beers and limited edition beers too.
Duvel
The Original Duvel is a natural slow brewed beer that is refermented in the bottle. It is brewed with Saaz and Styrian Golding hops giving it a slight fruitiness and a dry bitter finish.
Although not as powerful as the Tripel Hop Citra, it is by no means a session beer weighing in at a hefty 8.5% ABV.
A beer I have reviewed and liked although felt slightly like a shandy despite its ABV power. The Original Duvel Review.
6.66
6.66 is a Belgian Blonde beer that again is refermented in the bottle. A strange name for a beer, however all becomes clear when you realise it is brewed with six hops and has a 6.66% ABV.
This beer is fruity and hoppy with a hint of orange and sounds great, a beer I will be looking out for in the future.
Duvel Barrel Aged
Duvel Barrel Aged is a limited edition beer with a twist. The beer is brewed and then aged in Whiskey barrels for depth and flavour.
The first Barrel aged Duvel was back in 2017 using barrels from American Bourbon distilleries. Whereas the last one used whiskey barrels from an Irish distillery.
If barrel aged beer is your thing then expect around 11.5% ABV and be prepared to pay around £45 for a 750ml bottle.
Final Thoughts
Duvel Moorgat are a renowned brewery producing quality beers, of which none of them fall into the session bracket.
Their Tripel Hop IPA while not like a typical IPA is certainly a decent beer with plenty of punch. A beer I would definitely have again and again, although not on the same day.
