Super Bock Beer Review

Super Bock Beer is a pilsner style lager from Portugal brewed by the Super Bock Group which originally dates back to 1890. This beer has won 39 gold awards and is said to be the best selling Portuguese beer in the world. But that said, is it any good?

Super Bock pilsner lager is a pretty good, a decent lager with a good body. It pours a light gold with a one finger head. On the nose it is light malt with a little fruity background. The taste is sweet malt up front with a hint of fruit and a dry bitter finish. A good well balanced lager which gets a rate my beer score of 4.6 out of 5.0.

If lager is your beer, then Super Bock will not disappoint, I like it.

Super Bock Beer Review

The first thing I like about Super Bock is that it stands in a brown 660ml bottle dressed with a red label and red cap.

So a good pint full of beer from this bottle, no messing about with a piddly 330ml bottle or can. And with a decent 5.2% ABV it’s a positive before we start, so lets get it into a glass.

It pours a gleaming light gold with a one finger fluffy white top, which does fade a little, but forms a nice lacing around the glass.

Like most lagers the nose is pretty light, so not much to report except a delicate malt with a hint of fruit aroma.

The taste is similar to the smell with a malt sweetness up front carrying the slightest of fruit notes, a dry bitterness follows through to the end.

It’s lively in the mouth with big carbonation, but a decent pilsner style lager that is well balanced, crisp, dry and refreshing. I like it and would definitely not hesitate to buy it again, it gets a rate my beer score of 4.6 out of 5.0.

M’Lady likes it too, saying “A good well balanced lager, I like it, it’s a decent beer.” Short and sweet, but Lou also scored it well with a 4.4 out of 5.0.

Super Bock then is a great pilsner style lager with balance and body, if you see one grab it and enjoy.

Super Bock Group

The Super Bock Group was initially Companhia Uniao Fabril Portuense or CUFP which translates to Porto Factory Union Company.

This was back in March 1890, and in 1977 was renamed Unicer. However in 2017 the company was again renamed Super Bock Group after its most popular beverage.

The company produces beers and water, as well as soft drinks, cider and wine, and in 1995 launched the well known brand Carlsberg. In 2011 Unicer launches the Somersby cider brand.

They are the largest Portuguese beverage company.

Super Bock Beers

I have discovered that Super Bock is a great pilsner style lager, but do they have other beers that also might impress?

Well there are a few beers in the Super Bock range, but they also have another range called Coruja which include and IPA and an American amber lager.

Here are a few I would like to test drive.

Stout

Super Bock Stout was launched in 2003 and is said to be different from other dark beers. Using pale malt, caramel and chocolate malts it has a distinctive aroma and taste.

It is richer in extract with a fuller body which is complex and fruity. It sounds like a winner to me and at 5.0% ABV a second could be on the cards, if it’s not too rich.

It is a stout I would like to try.

Abadia

Super Bock Abadia is a red beer, a traditional beer of ancient brewing. Seeing as Abadia translates to Abbey, I am thinking this beer is an old style Abbey beer brewed by monks.

A little investigation and indeed it is a Belgian style Abbey beer that is said to have aromas of fruit, malt, spices and liqueur, which sounds interesting.

The taste is sweet and fruity with a bitter edge and weighs in at 6.4% ABV, so not a session beer.

India Pale Ale

Although this India Pale Ale comes out of the house of Super Bock it is of the Coruja range of beers which were launched in 2018.

This IPA is cold hopped and dry hopped producing intense fruity aromas. It apparently impresses with a huge amount of tropical notes and is described as an aroma firework.

But is it all aroma, what about the taste? I imagine it will be tropical with a good body and hopefully a nice bitter finish. I guess I will have to wait and see when I give it a test drive.

Final Thoughts

When I first saw this beer, just seeing the stand out name Super Bock and reading nothing else on the label, I thought it was a German beer. So was a little surprised to learn it is Portuguese.

I am impressed with the size of the bottle, and equally impressed with the beer itself. I like it, a good lager with plenty of body and a well balanced feel, although it is highly carbonated, but good all the same.

To sum it up, it is crisp, refreshing with a nice dry bitter finish.

If you have tried Super Bock, then do share your thoughts below and let me know what you think. If not and you spot one, then give it a go, it’s a good beer.
