Brouwerij De Halve Maan was founded in 1856 by Leon Maes in Bruges, Belgium. In 1867 it was taken over by his sons Henri and Achere.
However the two brothers died fairly young and their widows took on the job of keeping the brewery going. Until a son of one of the wives took control in 1919 also named Henri.
By 1958 Henri’s son, also named Henri took joint control with his father and eventually taking full control. Until 1981 when his daughter Véronique Maes became one of the first ever female brewers.
By 2005 Véronique’s son Xavier Vanneste became the six generation of the Maes family to run the brewery, He still runs it to this day.
The brewery has a lot of history and has seen a lot of expansion over the years. It even has an underground beer pipeline connecting the old brewery to the modern bottling plant.
This page will feature and beers I get to try from the De Halve Maan Brewery.
