Fruli Strawberry Beer Review, Is It Any Good

Fruli Strawberry Beer is a Belgian White Beer made with strawberry juice. It is brewed by the Family Brewery Huyghe in Melle, Belgium. So, is it any good?

Fruli Strawberry beer is more like a fruit juice then a beer. It pours red with a one finger pink head. On the nose it is strawberries and nothing else. The taste is strawberries and you guessed it, nothing else. It is extremely sweet and does not resemble a beer at all. It gets a shocking score of 0.0 out of 5.0.

That’s the lowest I have ever scored a beer, but there is nothing beery about it.

Fruli Strawberry Beer

I am not keen on fruit beers, but this one came in a mixed box from an online beer shop. So I didn’t pick it by choice, but decided to review anyway.

It stands in a 330ml brown bottle with a white, red and gold label. On the label is says Fruli Premium Strawberry Beer, it comes in at 4.1% ABV.

So it is a Belgian White beer brewed with strawberry juice. The white beer is brewed first in the normal way, and then the beer is transferred into tanks where they add the strawberry juice for a second fermentation.

Fruli Strawberry Beer Review

Cracking the cap and pouring into the glass and you get a beer that is strawberry red with a one finger pink head. The head fades fairly quickly to a thin cover.

On the nose it is an extremely strong smell of strawberries. However there is nothing else, the strawberry aroma is so overpowering you cannot get anything else at all.

It’s the same story with the taste, it is all strawberry and overpowers any other taste in the beer. Also it is so sweet in the mouth, like having a bowl of strawberries covered in sugar.

There is no resemblance to beer, it’s like a pure strawberry juice. Sorry Huyghe, but it’s a no from me. It gets a rate my beer score of 0.0 out of 5.0.

M’Lady liked it a little more than me, saying “I quite like it, although I couldn’t drink a lot of it as it’s too sweet.” As a beer Lou scores it just 1.0 out of 5.0.

If I was rating Fruli as a fruit juice, then it would probably get 5.0 out of 5.0, but as a beer it’s zero.

Brewery Huyghe

Huyghe Brewery is a Belgian brewer in Melle, Belgium. It was acquired by Leon Huyghe in 1906, although brewing on the site dates back to 1654.

The brewery didn’t use the name Huyghe until around 1938 and since then there have been several expansions. They have also acquired some other breweries over the years.

There most famous beer and possibly the most popular is the controversial Delirium Tremens which is said to have been banned in the US when it was first exported there. It is an 8.4% ABV Belgian Blonde style beer and pretty good, although you know you are drinking a strong beer.

The Delirium range of beers is easily recognisable with a ceramic style bottle and a pink elephant on the front. However they do make other beers too.

Huyghe Beers

The Huyghe Brewery make a surprising amount of beer. There are quite a few different ranges of beer which include your straight Belgian strong beers, as well as some of those weird fruit style beers like Fruli.

However there should be something for everyone among the beers they brew. Here are a few I picked out to feature.

Export

Export is a blonde style lager beer with no added fruit, nothing fancy, just a proper lager. It is said to have a good balanced taste with a light sweetness up front and a nice bitterness to balance that lingers in the aftertaste.

Sounds like a decent straight lager and on I will seek out and try. Export weighs in at 4.5% ABV so sits well within the session bracket.

Vieille Villers

Vieille is part of the Villers range of beers and is a darker beer. It is dark brown with a slight red tinge and a creamy head. Flavours of malt caramel and fruit up front with a nice bitterness on the finish. A little coffee and date are detected in the aftertaste.

Sounds pretty good, but it does pack a punch at 7.0% ABV, so probably just one is advisable. Could be a good sipper and savour kind of beer.

Blanche Des Neiges

Blanche Des Neiges is a Belgian White beer that stands in the glass a hazy pale yellow with a pure white head. On the nose it has floral aromas with hints of citrus.

Wheat comes through on the taste as well as some citrus too, said to be a good balance between fresh, acid and fruity.

On the higher end of session, this beer weighs in at 4.8% ABV. Another Huyghe beer I would like to try.

Final Thoughts

So Huyghe brewery make plenty of beers, clearly I won’t like them all. However there are plenty I would still like to try.

Fruli Strawberry Beer is not for me, and in my opinion the strawberry juice spoilt what was a perfectly good white beer.

But I guess it does suit some peoples palates, we are all different after all.

If you have tried Fruli Strawberry beer, then do share your thoughts and let me know what you think of it as a beer.
