Jemima’s Pitchfork Golden Ale comes from the Glamorgan Brewing Company in Llantrisant, Mid Glamorgan, Wales. A brewery that celebrates its thirtieth birthday this year and is still independent. So what is this golden ale like?
Jemima’s Pitchfork is a pretty decent beer, easy to drink and full of flavour. It pours a light golden straw with a three finger foamy white head. On the nose it packs a citrus punch with an array of tropical fruit aromas. The taste reflects the nose with a nice malt base and a citrus kick of tropical fruits like grapefruit, pineapple and possibly orange too. A great golden ale with good balance, it gets a score of 4.6 out of 5.0.
A joy to drink, this golden ale has it all, a cracking beer.

Jemima’s Pitchfork Golden Ale Review
It stands in a 500ml brown bottle with a bright label resembling a lake scene. A beer named after Jemima Nicholas who in 1797 armed with just a pitchfork managed to round up twelve French soldiers in the battle of Fishguard.
A feisty lady indeed, so this beer needs to be good to pay homage to such a heroine.
Brewed with Cascade, Chinook, Citra, El Dorado and Goldings hops, it certainly packs a hoppy punch. However at a 4.5% ABV it is a mid range session beer.
So more than one is just fine, but I have just the one so its time to crack it open and get stuck in.
My pour may have been slightly aggressive and I did straighten the glass a little early. The result is a big three finger white foamy top, but that’s fine.
It soon died down and ended up as a normal half finger cover, which stayed the duration. A fine flow of bubbles continually rise to the top and a nice decorative lacing forms around the glass.
Drinking Jemima’s Pitchfork
While I let the substantial head calm down, it’s time to have a sniff around.
On the nose then it is all about those citrus notes with plenty of tropical fruit aromas flying around. Pineapple, grapefruit and pear seem to be the fruity notes I pick up. Maybe a slight floral aroma too, but its hard to pick out with all that citrus popping the nostrils.
Going in for a taste and I am expecting a tropical explosion of flavours. However it’s not in your face hoppy, a nice biscuit malt starts the show off.
Then there is the arrival of those tropical citrus notes, but not by the shed load. It’s more subtle than that, pineapple, pear and possibly orange, then a grapefruit bitterness pops in to finish things off.
A really well balanced beer, crisp, refreshing and flavoursome with a nice bitter finish. An easy drinking beer, in fact it is a joy to drink.
Jemima’s Pitchfork gets a rate my beer score of 4.6 out of 5.0.
M’Lady is of the same mind saying, “A crisp refreshing ale with citrus flavours and a hint of sweet fruit (orange) with a balanced bitter aftertaste, I like it.” Lou scores it the same 4.6 out of 5.0.
A Great beer from Glamorgan Brewing Co.
Glamorgan Brewing Co
Glamorgan Brewing Co started life as The Glamorgan Beer Company, not a brewery at all. A wholesale company supplying beer, wine and spirits to local pubs, restaurants and clubs.
It was founded in 1994 by John Anstee in Gorslas, a village in Carmarthenshire, Wales.
In 2011 John invested in a small brewing kit and began to experiment with brewing beer. Later that year with a new name Kite Brewery the first beer was launched, Cwrw Gorslas.
After demand increased, 2013 saw a move to larger premises and a larger brewing set up. The following year and the brewery and wholesale business were brought under the same business as one. This led to a rebrand and the name Glamorgan Brewing Company.
In 2015 John took a step back and handed the running of the business to his son Richard Anstee. Who is managing director to this day.
Glamorgan Beer Range
There is plenty of beer to choose from, Glamorgan Brewing Co has a decent range of Welsh Ales. Cwrw Gorslas is still very much in the mix.
However they brew Ciders, Lagers, Pales, IPA, Bitter and stout too. They even have a few beers named after the much loved Welsh Footballer Gareth Bale.
Apart from their own beer, at their online shop you can also buy soft drinks, as well as wines and spirits too.
But for me it’s all about the beer, so here are a few Glamorgan brews that are on my hit list.
Welsh Lager
It is what it says on the tin, Welsh Lager, but it’s no ordinary lager. Apparently it is the nations favourite, due to it winning the title of best lager in Wales and the West Country in 2020.
Using Saaz hops it is a crisp and refreshing as you would expect from a good lager. Something tells me that it has a smooth mouthfeel and a good depth of flavours. I am looking forward to trying this beer.
At 4.7% ABV it is at the higher end of session, but also means it has a little kick too.
Dead Canary
Dead Canary is a modern Welsh IPA, amber in colour and well hopped too. A cocktail of hops such as Amarillo, Centenial, Challenger, Columbus and Simcoe make for hoppy delight with a morish bitter finish.
Named in honour of the coal mine canaries its a beer on my hits list. At a straight 5.% ABV it sits in the fence of session. A second is fine, but don’t go mad.
Welsh Cake Stout
Inspired by the famous Welsh Cake, as small flat bread style cake normally baked on a griddle. While I personally am not that keen on them, I do love a stout, so its on my beer list.
Adding Raisons and oats to this brew is the basis of the Welsh cake flavour. The hops used are Bramling Cross and Challenger.
At 4.3% ABV it doesn’t pack a punch on strength. However I’m expecting a rich deep stout with possible caky notes, sounds good to me.
Final Thoughts
Although I haven’t tried any other Glamorgan Brewing Co beer. After Jemima’s Pitchfork I am looking forward to getting stuck into the rest of their range.
As I said they have a good range with plenty of choice.
Jemima’s Pitchfork Golden Ale is a real winner and is a joy to drink. Definitely a beer I will be visiting again and again.
