Skirrid Welsh Bitter Review

Skirrid Welsh Bitter is a standard bitter beer from Tudor Brewery located in Llanhilleth, Wales. The name is taken from the large peak Skirrid Fawr that overlooks the Welsh town of Abergavenny. So is Skririd bitter any good?

Skirrid Welsh Bitter is a decent beer, nothing fancy just a good solid best bitter. It pours amber gold with a two finger foamy top. On the nose is malt caramel up front with a slight grainy smell. The taste is malt caramel up front with a nice hoppy bitterness to finish. A smooth full bodied beer which gets a rate my beer score of 4.5 out of 5.0.

A cracking little standard bitter session beer.

Skirrid Welsh Bitter

Skirrid Welsh Bitter comes in a 500ml brown bottle with a black and grey label. It has a picture of what looks like the hill or mountain peak it is named after. Just like the beer inside, the label is nothing fancy, but does the job.

The beer is 4.2% ABV so is the perfect session bitter.

Pouring it into a glass and it settles an amber gold with a generous two finger white head. It is initially clear, but when the end of the bottle is poured in it does turn slightly hazy. This is because the beer is unfiltered and contains a little sediment.

The nose is not strong, but I pick up a little malt caramel as well as some hoppy aromas. There is also a slight grainy scent to it too.

The taste is similar to the smell with a nice malt caramel up front that isn’t sweet, but smooth. The finish is a nice hoppy bitterness that lingers in the aftertaste.

Skirrid is smooth, full flavoured and well balanced with a nice bitter finish. A standard best bitter in my opinion, but a good one. It gets a rate my beer score of 4.5 out of 5.0.

M’Lady quite likes it too, saying “Tastes like a good quality beer, there is something quite nice about it, smooth and balanced.” Lou scores it slightly less at 4.3 out of 5.0.

A pretty high score for Lou because she is not a bitter fan.

Tudor Brewery

Tudor Brewery is a family run micro brewery located in Llanhilleth, Wales. It was a brewery that shut down and was acquired by Stephen Devine back in 2011.

Sadly Stephen passed after a fight with Cancer, but his family decided to keep the brewery going and set about running it together.

Since then the brewery has collected plenty of awards and is still a traditional style brewery. Everything from the brewing to bottling and labeling is done by hand.

Their beers are vegan and gluten free and although they don’t have a vast range, they do include IPA’s ales and stouts, as well as some seasonal and special beers.

They may be a small brewery, but they are strong and produce good quality beers.

Tudor Beers

As I said Tudor Brewery don’t have a vast range of beers to choose from. Having said that, there seems to be more that the last beer of theirs I tried which was Green Green Grass Of Home.

So the range is growing, and there is still a good range to choose from. Here are a few of their beers to look out for.

Sugarloaf

Sugarloaf is a real ale and another beer named after a Welsh mountain. It is described as a medium dry beer fill of colour and flavour.

A bitter style beer with smooth caramel flavours and hopefully a little bitterness too. Sugarloaf weighs in at a session 4.7% ABV, so a second one is okay.

Black Mountain Stout

A popular stout from Tudor, and one that has been so since 2011 winning several awards along the way. Expect rich caramel and chocolate flavours with a full but smooth body.

Sounds like a decent stout, and at just 4.0% ABV more than one is okay, although it depends how rich in flavour it is. It might be a sip and savour beer like many stouts, I will have to get hold of one and find out.

Blitz

Blitz is a beer made with pomegranate and blackcurrant, so expect it to be a little fruity, or maybe a lot fruity. I am not sure I like the sound of this one, what place has pomegranate or blackcurrant got it beer?

I am not a fruit beer fan so this beer is probably not for me. However if you do like a fruit beer, then Blitz my be right up your street. It does sit on the fence of session at a straight 5.0% ABV, so fill your boots.

Final Thoughts

Tudor Brewery is small, but they produce a decent range of beers that are simple and straightforward. Except perhaps Blitz beer, which is a fruity beer.

I have tried two of Tudors beers now and both have been decent quality beers, so I will be on the look out for more. Although a might swerve Blitz if I come across it, or maybe not.

If you have tried any of the Tudor brews, then do share your experience and let me know what you think.
