Vedett Extra Pilsner Beer Review

Vedett Extra Pilsner is a Belgian blonde premium lager from the Duvel Moortgat Brewery, an old family brewery dating back to 1871. The brewery states that this lager will quench any thirst, quite a statement, but is it any good?

I have to say Vedett Extra Pilsner is a good thirst quencher, it’s light, refreshing and moreish. It pours a very light pale straw with a crisp white top. The nose is pretty subtle with a slight malt aroma, but nothing else. As for the taste, it is sweet malt up front with a little hoppy edge that develops into a satisfying bitter finish. It’s fresh, crisp and refreshing and gets a rate my beer score of 4.6 out of 5.0.

A great little pilsner lager.

Vedett Extra Pilsner Review

The Vedett Extra Pilsner stands in a dumpy little brown 330ml bottle with a pretty plain white, black and red label.

The bottle I have says 5.2% ABV, although on their website at time of writing it says 5.0% ABV. So maybe they have dropped it recently.

It is described as being brewed to quench even the most stubborn of thirsts, offering a full body and refreshment from start to finish.

Time to get it in the glass.

It pours a light pale straw with a crisp white three finger head. The beer looks lively in the glass with plenty of tiny bubbles rising up the glass.

On the nose it is pretty tame with a light malt aroma, but nothing much else, apart from the fact it smells really fresh.

The taste is sweet malt up front with a building bitterness that finishes well. It has a refreshing carbonation and a nice smooth mouthfeel. It is well balanced, crisp, light and refreshing, a little moreish too. I like it, a good quality pilsner lager that gets a score of 4.6 out of 5.0.

M’Lady likes it too, saying ” A decent pilsner with a smooth refreshing taste, there is a slight bitterness, but a well balanced beer. Lou scores it 4.4 out of 5.0.

So Vedett Extra Pilsner is a damn good beer, if you see it then give it a try for yourself.

Duvel Moortgat Brewery

Duvel Moortgat Brewery dates back to 1871 and was started by Jan-Léonard Moortgat along with his wife Maria De Block. It is located in Puurs-Sint-Amands, Belgium, although they now have several locations around the world.

In 1900 Jan-Léonard was joined by his two sons Albert and Victor with Albert concentrating on the brewing and Victor on sales and delivery.

Today they have around thirteen breweries and produce over twenty different brands including Duvel, Chouffe, Liefmans, Maredsous, Firestone Walker, Bernard and of course Vedett.

So there is a good chance you could stumble upon a Duvel Moortgat beer most places around the world.

Duvel Moortgat Beers

There are plenty of beers to choose from this brewery, with so many brands and different beers within those brands we are spoilt for choice.

Here are a random few I thought I would highlight and look out for myself.

Wild Jo

Wild Jo is a Blond beer from the De Koninck brand and uses wild yeasts in the brewing process. This beer evolves in the bottle and apparently gets wilder over time. It is a dry hopped beer giving a slightly hazy appearance with an earthy and floral aroma.

The taste is sweet up front developing into a bitter finish with a little tart edge. Wild Jo weighs in at 6.0% ABV, so is not a session beer.

It sounds like a decent beer and one I will keep an eye out for.

Maredsous Brune

Maredsous Brune is a dark abbey beer with a red brown appearance topped by a light brown head. It has a caramel aroma with roasted and coffee notes.

A similar experience in the taste with those caramel and roasted coffee flavours along with the presence of alcohol. Yes, it is a strong beer weighing in at a hefty 8.0% ABV.

This one is not for the light hearted, but ut does sound good though, I would like to get my hands on a bottle.

Tank 7

Tank 7 comes from the Boulevard brand and is an American twist on a Belgian style saison. It has a fruity edge to it with a little spice thrown in. There are some grapefruit hoppy notes giving it a nice bitter finish.

Sounds like a great beer, but beware because it packs a punch at a huge 8.5% ABV, maybe just the one then. This is definitely a beer I would like to try.

Final Thoughts

Duvel Moortgat then are a busy beer producer with many brands under their wing. I have had several of their beers in the past and they have all been pretty good.

When it comes to Vedett Extra Pilsner it is the same, a really good beer. A decent all round pilsner that is well balanced, crisp and refreshing. Does it quench a thirst? Yes.

If you have tried Vedett Extra Pilsner or any other Duvel Moortgat beers, then do share your experience and let me know your score.
