Voll Damm Double Malt beer comes out of S A Damm brewery in Barcelona, Spain. They are best known for their Estrella beer which is pretty popular here in the UK too. Voll Damm is a Marzen style beer that has twice the malt and been late hoped too, but what is it like?
Voll Damm Double Malt beer is pretty good, it has good depth and flavour. It pours an amber gold with a one finger head. On the nose it is loaded with caramel malt aromas and a slight hoppy hint too. The taste goes the same way with plenty of caramel malt up front, a slight hoppy edge reveals a tiny hint of citrus. It is a rich smooth beer and gets 4.6 out o 5.0.
It’s like a lager with guts, a full body with depth and flavour.

Voll Damm Double Malt Beer Review
The beer comes in a small 330ml dark green can red and white writing that has a gothic style. On the front of the can it says Doble Malta which means they double the malt to give the beer more body and flavour.
It also says late hopping which means they add some more hops late in the brewing process. The hops used are Nugget, Magnum and Taurus.
It might only be a small can, but it is probably enough to experience this beer because it comes in at a whopping 7.2% ABV.
Definitely not a session beer, so lets get it open and in a glass.
Drinking Voll Damm Double Malt Beer
The pour reveals quite a dark beer for a lager, and amber gold with a on finger slightly off white head. The head does fade to a thin cover, but leaves a nice lacing around the glass as you drink it.
The nose is pretty strong and loaded with a caramel malt aroma. In the background there is a little hoppy hint, but the malt is so strong nothing else gets a look in.
It is a similar thing with the flavour, fully loaded with caramel and biscuit malt that nothing much else comes through. The slightest hint of citrus lurks in the background and for me there is a little banana like flavour.
The mouth feel is rich and smooth, it is a full bodied beer that has a sweet edge but not much bitterness to balance it. However even so it is a really nice beer and I like it enough to give it a decent 4.6 out of 5.0.
M’Lady likes it too, saying “It is a complete beer, rich and smooth with a slight bitter edge, more depth than your average lager.” Lou scores it a slightly less 4.4 out of 5.0.
So we both like Voll Damm Double Malt beer, definite;y one of the better lagers I have tried.
Damm Brewery
Damm Brewery was founded in 1876 by August Kuentzmann Damm, his wife Melanie and his cousin Joseph Damm in Barcelona, Spain.
Their dream was to brew beer and after leaving Alsace in France they settled in Barcelona, Spain and began to brew beer.
Their first beer was Strasberg, a beer said to be adapted for the Mediterranean climate and carrying the famous star you still see on Damm beer.
Estrella was born and still uses the same recipe from back then which is 100% natural ingredients.
In 1910 Damm became incorporated when three major breweries in Barcelona merged. Since then Damm has continued to grow and partnered with many other companies over the years.
Damm Brewery is a will known and established brewery in Spain.
Damm Beers
The range of beers Damm offer is by no means huge, they have nine beers on their website. Obviously Estrella Damm being the most well known of their beers. Others include Damm Lemon, which I have had, three Damm zero alcohol beers, an IPA as well as a malt and wheat beer brewed with spices called Inedit.
Here are a few of their beers.
Complot
Complot is a Mediterranean IPA which is made with eight hop varieties added at different stages of the brewing process. The hops are Amarilla, Centennial, Citra, Mosaic, Nugget, Simcoe, Nugget and Willamette.
I do remember having this beer about a year a go while enjoying Tapa’s in a Spanish deli/restaurant. It is quite complex in flavour, pretty hoppy with citrus and tropical fruits.
It weighs in at 6.6% ABV so not one for a session, a pretty potent beers with intense flavours.
Damm Lemon
Damm Lemon is a shandy beer with lemon, and is another one I have recently had with a review to follow soon. I won’t give much away except to say it is certainly lemon, so if you like lemon then you are in for a treat.
Being a shandy it is pretty low in alcohol too, so you can session away at just 3.2% ABV. Primafiora Lemon Variety are used in the making of Damm Lemon, as well as a touch of lime too.
The recipe is 6 parts beer and 4 parts lemon with a dash of lime.
Malquerida
Malquerida is a red beer, according to Damm it is a new style of beer especially made for Latin food. Perfectly paired with strong spicy food or to be enjoyed on its own.
Made with wheat, hops and malt as you would expect, but also maize, orange and Jamaica flower too, which gives it a red colour.
At 5.0% ABV it sits right on the fence of session, but does sounds a pretty interesting beer.

Final Thoughts
You have probably had a few Estrella’s over the years, but there is more to the Damm Brewery than that beer alone, even though it is a popular beer.
Voll Damm is a really rich smooth beer with plenty of malt flavours and a little hoppy edge. I enjoyed it and would not hesitate to have it again.
If you have tried Voll Damm, then do share your thoughts, let me know what you think of this strong beer.
